THE TOP 7 FRENCH WOMEN CHEFS & THEIR BEST RECIPES
THE TOP 7 FRENCH WOMEN CHEFS & THEIR BEST RECIPES
If someone asks you to identify a well-known American chef who is female, Julia Child most likely comes to mind. But what if someone asked you to name one that is French? Ironically, the majority of France’s most renowned chefs are male, despite statistics showing that French women spend far more time in the kitchen than French men! Women made up only 1% of French cooks who received Michelin stars in 2010. Though there is still much work ahead of the restaurant business, this year’s percentage increased to 10 percent.

The writer, filmmaker, and gastronomist Vérane Frédiana is largely responsible for the increased visibility of female cooks. We highly suggest Frédiana’s books and her documentary, which explores the experiences of women working in the restaurant sector. The trailer for her documentary, À la recherche des femmes chefs, may be viewed here. We’re particularly thrilled to publish our list of the most outstanding French women chefs working today, and our articles on French cuisine and dessert are some of our favorites. See below for some of their delicious dishes!
AMANDINE CHAIGNOT
In contrast to other peers, Amandine Chaignot had no initial desire to pursue a career in cooking. She enrolled in pharmacy school but left in 1998 to attend the most famous école de cuisine in France, École Ferrandi. (Aside: although Americans may be better familiar with the Cordon Bleu, Ferrandi enjoys the greatest reputation in France!) After serving as an apprentice to a number of well-known chefs, Chaignot worked at the Plaza Athénée in London before relocating to the Ritz Hotel. In Paris, she founded her own eatery called Pouliche, which she eventually transformed into a farmer’s market during the Covid-19 outbreak. Chaignot is well-known in France for serving on the MasterChef jury.
DOMINIQUE CRENN
Read this article on the tremendously inspiring Dominique Crenn, the first American woman to receive three Michelin stars, to learn more about the reasons for the difficulty French women have in the restaurant industry. In 1988, Crenn went from France to San Francisco. She then relocated to Indonesia, where she worked her way up to become the first female head chef. In 2011, she launched the highly acclaimed Atelier Crenn, which was followed by the more reasonably priced Petit Crenn. In 2016, she was named “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants”‘ finest female chef. Work on your French.
HÉLÈNE DARROZE
Even if you’re having problems pronouncing “escaoutoun,” you should still sample Hélène Darroze’s mouthwatering specialty dish! Given that Darroze is a native of the South West of France, many of her recipes are based on Basque cuisine. Darroze comes from a well-known line of restaurateurs. For her Saint-Germain-des-Prés restaurant Chez Darroze, she received her first Michelin star. Darroze is well-known for her appearances on the French edition of Top Chef and for owning a two-star Michelin restaurant at the Connaught Hotel in London.
STÉPHANIE LE QUELLEC
2011 saw Stéphanie Le Quellec triumph on French Top Chef. In 2019, she launched her own eatery, La Scène, in Paris’s 8th arrondissement. La Scene received two Michelin stars in 2020, which is an exceptional honor for a restaurant of its age. The spouse of Le Quellec works as a chef as well, and together they manage to raise their three kids. Le Quellec clarified in a recent interview, saying, “Being the token woman is the one thing about being a woman that I cannot stand.” I desire legality. It must be my effort if I receive another star. The feminist movement won’t have any significance unless women’s contributions, not their gender, are acknowledged.
ANNE-SOPHIE PIC
One of the most well-known French chefs in the world is Anne-Sophie Pic. More Michelin stars than any other woman chef, she has won “meilleure cheffe du monde” many times. Pic hails from a family of three-star chefs, and her father is honored in one of her hallmark recipes. She also frequently uses pink pralines to revamp her great-grandmother’s well-known île flottante.
JULIA SEDEFDJIAN
Julia Sedefdjian, who is twenty-one years old, is the youngest French chef to get a Michelin star. In 2018, she launched her first eatery, Baieta. In the niçois dialect Sedefdjian spoke growing up, “baieta” means “kiss.” Bô, which translates to “kiss” in Creole, is the new, less expensive restaurant that Sedefdjian founded since she works hard to make her Mediterranean meals accessible. Delicious and interesting meals, like as Sedefdjian’s famed bouillabaieta, a unique take on bouillabaisse, are available for takeout at Bô.
JESSICA PRÉALPATO
According to the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list, Jessica Préalpato was named the “Best Pastry Chef in the World” in 2019. Her pastries at the Plaza Athénée in Paris earned her three Michelin stars before she started working at the Carlton Tower Jumeirah hotel in London. Her pastries are made in accordance with a philosophy she refers to as desseralité (a combination of the terms dessert and naturalité). She stays away from sugar and creamier ingredients, preferring to utilize fruits and other natural sweeteners.
